Celebrating another award-winning design

We have won third place in the competition for the design of the Islamic Center and Mosque in Visoko, organized by the Islamic Community of Visoko.

Our proposal for the Islamic Center, located in the Luke settlement, envisions a multifunctional complex divided into distinct zones: commerce, dining, a madrasa, administrative offices, a multipurpose hall, the mosque and a garage, satisfying both the spiritual and practical needs of the community.

The architectural concept centers around the journey from the profane to the sacred, crafting a spatial experience that guides visitors from the external, everyday environment to an inner realm of peace and spiritual security. Beyond its primary role as a place for praying, the complex is designed to be a center for learning, knowledge, and community engagement, further reinforcing its importance to the local community.

This recognition inspires us to continue creating spaces that reflect cultural and spiritual values.

Winning conceptual design for residential and commercial complex, Visoko

The project of a residential and commercial complex called Two Rivers is located in the town of Visoko. It consists of three blocks, one residential and two of residential commercial character.

The architectural concept is designed to create a peaceful green oasis around the residential buildings, and achieve direct visual and physical contact between all housing units and the features of the micro-location such as the Sun, the view, the air, the sound of the river, and the smell of nature.

The architectural design follows the curved lines of the form of the objects following the initially set goal of the project, which is that the architectural form follows the shape of the plot without imposing its shape, materialization, spatial volume, and concept on the natural environment, but tends to become a part of it.

Top-selected conceptual design for residential and business complex, Nedžarići, Sarajevo

NB Atelier was invited to participate in the invitational architectural competition for the conceptual project of a residential and business complex in Nedžarići, Sarajevo. Our submission was distinguished as one of the top two selected entries in the 2023 competition.

The objective of the project was to create a structure that will become a focal point that captures attention, given that the surrounding environment lacks a clear identity.  The design’s simplicity, expressed through clean lines and an architectural composition featuring a combination of tall and low square blocks atop a green square pedestal—designed as the new center of the movement—serves to establish a fresh identity. The primary ambition is for this new complex to be unique, timeless, flexible, and modern in its materialization, with clear and effective internal communication links.

Between persistence and change-methodological aspects of the Corn-Markezic Villa reuse

This paper was published in the International Journal of Architectural Technology and Sustainability VITRUVIO, and it examines the questions of time (transience) and space (persistence) in architecture and culture. It was written by Elša Turkušić Jurić and Haris Bradić. The endurance and relevance of these topics are best seen in the integration of architectural heritage into contemporary life.

The paper elaborates this by applying a methodological-applicative model to the renovation of the modernist Corn-Markesic villa in Sarajevo’s Crni Vrh housing estate, which has been designated a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The model seeks to achieve a practical and architecturally creative solution for the villa’s adaptations.

BigSEE Architecture Award 2019 - Winner, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Residential architecture.

This project was realised in Rakovica (Sarajevo), in the area dominated by family weekend houses. The main idea was to sublimate the residential heritage from both Bosnia and Herzegovina in terms of the house forms, materials and function. Analysis of the traditional house forms was first conducted and then a modern composition created that rests on the autochthonous vernacular architecture. With this in mind, we opted for stone and wood application to achieve this effect.

There are two ground-floor units connected by an interior corridor and cladded with natural stone. The first unit, approached via sloped pedestrian ramp, is a square-shaped 8.8×8.8m form, cladded with natural stone – hresa in combination with wooden decorative elements on all four sides. Tondach plain clay tiles are used for roofing, and the roof peak is 6.14m high. The other unit is almost square-shaped with dimensions of 8.3×9.3. It has a plain white façade combined with white wood – the Siberian larch. The highest point of this structure is 6.55m. Both volumes together make one physical structure with two separate zones, public and private.
