CORNMARKEZICVILLA
A protected modernist villa reconstructed to contemporary living standards, preserving its historical identity while achieving low-energy performance and enhanced spatial comfort.
The villa is located in Sarajevo and represents a rare example of modernist architecture within the city. Despite significant damage over time, the building has retained its original proportions, spatial structure, and material character. Due to its architectural and cultural value, the villa is listed as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The design approach addresses the complexity of working with protected heritage. The proposal envisions a complete reconstruction of the existing structure, carefully preserving its original aesthetic, volumetric, and historical qualities while adapting the building to contemporary functional and technical standards.
A new pavilion is introduced as a discreet extension of the living area, conceived as a modern intervention that complements rather than competes with the existing structure. The intervention is clearly legible yet spatially integrated, allowing the historic villa to remain dominant while gaining new functionality.
The final objective is to materialise the building using contemporary construction systems and materials, transforming it into a low-energy residence with a high level of indoor comfort, without compromising its architectural integrity or heritage value.
